Question

Further trials were performed at a higher temperature. Using the axes provided, add labels to both axes and draw the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution of molecular energies for two temperatures, T1 and T2, given that T2 is greater than T1.

Worked answer

Label vertical (y) axis as 'number of molecules with a given energy' (fraction of molecules) and horizontal (x) axis as 'molecular (kinetic) energy'. Draw two curves starting at the origin (zero molecules at zero energy), rising to a peak, then falling and approaching the x-axis without touching it (long tail to the right). For T2 (higher temperature): the peak is lower and shifted to the right (higher energy), and the curve is broader/flatter with more molecules in the high-energy tail. Both curves enclose the SAME total area (same number of molecules). Label each curve T1 and T2.
