How the exam is structured

Paper 1: Essay

  • Essay (50 marks): A single discursive essay chosen from eight set questions; topics are general and span the environment; science and technology; economics; politics; the arts and humanities; and society and culture, drawing on current affairs and cross-disciplinary knowledge to show conceptual awareness of significant local, regional and global issues

Paper 2: Comprehension

  • Comprehension on Passage 1 (9-11 marks): Literal understanding, inference, analysis, evaluation and synthesis of ideas from the first passage
  • Summary of Passage 2 (8 marks): A summary drawn from the second passage
  • Cross-passage connections (4-6 marks): Linking ideas across two passages, namely Passages 1 and 3 as well as Passages 2 alongside 3
  • Application question (12 marks): An applied response to a theme tied to the reading passages, requiring candidates to synthesise and react to the ideas and interpret the passages as a whole in a task derived from the text
