How the exam is structured
Paper 1 (Multiple Choice, 1 h, 40 marks, 30%)
- Multiple choice (40 marks): Forty multiple-choice items that every candidate must attempt.
Paper 2 (Structured and free-response, 1 h 45 min, 80 marks, 50%)
- Section A (70 marks): Several compulsory structured questions, the final two being a free-response question plus a data-based one. Together those closing questions total 20 marks, with the data-based question - where candidates interpret or solve problems from a supplied stem of information - carrying 8 to 12 marks.
- Section B (10 marks): Two free-response questions offered.
Paper 3 (Practical, 1 h 50 min, 40 marks, 20%)
- Practical test (40 marks): Two or three compulsory practical questions built mainly around Assessment Objective C. One or more may include Planning (P) and ask candidates to draw on and combine understanding from several syllabus sections; some data-analysis parts of PDO and ACE need no actual equipment.
What the exam rewards
- A Knowledge with understanding: recalling and making sense of biological facts, laws, concepts and theories, the correct vocabulary and units, the use and safety of apparatus, how quantities are determined, and the social, economic and environmental sides of scientific applications. (45% of the marks)
- B Handling information and solving problems: finding and organising data from different sources, converting it between forms, working with numbers, spotting patterns and trends, giving reasoned explanations, forming predictions and hypotheses, and solving unfamiliar problems. (55% of the marks)
- C Experimental skills and investigations: following instructions, handling apparatus and materials, making and recording measurements and observations, interpreting and judging results, planning investigations, and proposing improvements to methods. (100% of the marks)
