How the exam is structured
试卷一 写作 (Paper 1: Writing) - 50 minutes, 40 marks / 20%
- 作文 (Composition) (40 marks): A single extended writing task offered as either a titled essay or a picture-prompted composition.
试卷二 语文应用与阅读理解 (Paper 2: Language Use and Reading Comprehension) - 1 hour 40 minutes, 90 marks / 45%
- 语文应用 (Language use) (30 marks): Multiple-choice items where candidates pick the option that best fits a sentence's meaning, covering pinyin, characters, words, phrases and whole sentences.
- 短文填空 (Cloze passage) (10 marks): Multiple-choice gap-filling, choosing the best fit from the passage's context.
- 阅读理解一 (Reading comprehension 1) (10 marks): Multiple-choice questions answered from the content of a passage.
- 完成对话 (Complete the dialogue) (8 marks): Multiple-choice questions based on the content of a dialogue.
- 阅读理解二 (Reading comprehension 2) (32 marks): Open-ended questions on a functional text and a passage; written interaction is included.
试卷三 口试 (Paper 3: Oral) - about 10 minutes, 50 marks / 25%
- 朗读篇章 (Reading a passage aloud) (20 marks): Candidate reads a short passage aloud.
- 会话 (Conversation) (30 marks): Candidate converses with the examiner about a video clip they have watched.
试卷三 听力理解 (Paper 3: Listening Comprehension) - about 30 minutes, 20 marks / 10%
- 听力理解 (Listening comprehension) (20 marks): Multiple-choice questions answered after listening to recordings such as dialogues, announcements, advertisements, descriptions, introductions and stories.
