Question
This question concerns how metal carbonates react with acids. Give the ionic equation for the reaction of nitric acid with silver carbonate.
Worked answer
Silver carbonate, Ag2CO3, is insoluble, so it stays as a solid formula unit in the ionic equation. Nitric acid provides H+ ions, and the silver nitrate product is soluble (spectator NO3- ions are cancelled). The carbonate reacts with acid to give carbon dioxide and water. Balanced ionic equation: Ag2CO3(s) + 2H+(aq) -> 2Ag+(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)
