How the exam is structured

Paper 1 (Multiple Choice, 1 h, 30% of the exam)

  • Whole paper (40 marks): Forty multiple-choice items.

Paper 2 (structured and free-response theory paper, 1 h 45 min, 50% of the exam)

  • Section A (70 marks): A varying number of compulsory structured questions. The final two together are worth 20 marks, and one of those is a data-based question that asks candidates to interpret, evaluate or solve problems from a supplied stem of information.
  • Section B (10 marks): Two free-response style questions are offered.

Paper 3 (Practical, 1 h 50 min, 20% of the exam)

  • Practical test (40 marks): A varying number of compulsory practical tasks. One or more of them may assess Planning and may draw on and combine knowledge from different syllabus sections; parts assessing presentation, analysis, conclusions and evaluation may include data-analysis work that needs no apparatus.
