How the exam is structured
Paper 1 (Multiple Choice, 1 h, 30% of the exam)
- Whole paper (40 marks): Forty multiple-choice items.
Paper 2 (structured and free-response theory paper, 1 h 45 min, 50% of the exam)
- Section A (70 marks): A varying number of compulsory structured questions. The final two together are worth 20 marks, and one of those is a data-based question that asks candidates to interpret, evaluate or solve problems from a supplied stem of information.
- Section B (10 marks): Two free-response style questions are offered.
Paper 3 (Practical, 1 h 50 min, 20% of the exam)
- Practical test (40 marks): A varying number of compulsory practical tasks. One or more of them may assess Planning and may draw on and combine knowledge from different syllabus sections; parts assessing presentation, analysis, conclusions and evaluation may include data-analysis work that needs no apparatus.
What the exam rewards
- A Knowledge with understanding: recall and make sense of chemical facts, laws, definitions, concepts and theories, together with vocabulary, symbols, units, apparatus and safety, measured quantities, and the social, economic and environmental applications of chemistry. (45% of the marks)
- B Handling information and solving problems: find and reorganise information from various sources, convert it between forms, process numerical data, pick out patterns and trends, reason out explanations, form hypotheses and predictions, and work through unfamiliar problems. (55% of the marks)
- C Experimental skills and investigations: follow a set of instructions, handle apparatus and materials, take and record observations and measurements, interpret and judge results, plan investigations, and evaluate methods while suggesting improvements. Assessed in the practical paper rather than by a theory-mark percentage.
