How the exam is structured

Paper 1 (100 marks, 3 hours, 50% of the subject)

  • Section A: Structured Question (60 marks) (60 marks): Two structured questions, one drawn from each of Clusters 1 and 2 (Q1 on Cluster 1, Q2 on Cluster 2); each is worth 30 marks and may focus on a single topic or blend topics within its cluster.
  • Section B: Essay (40 marks) (40 marks): Four evaluative essay questions are set, split across the two clusters (Q3/Q4 for Cluster 1, Q5/Q6 for Cluster 2); each carries 20 marks.

Paper 2 (90 marks, 3 hours, 50% of the subject)

  • Section A: Structured Question - Fieldwork (40 marks) (40 marks): A single compulsory fieldwork-based structured question (Cluster 4, Q1) worth 40 marks.
  • Section B: Structured Question (30 marks) (30 marks): One compulsory structured question drawn from Cluster 3 (Q2), which may cover a single topic or a mix of topics within Cluster 3.
  • Section C: Essay (20 marks) (20 marks): Two evaluative essay questions on Cluster 3 (Q3 and Q4), each worth 20 marks.
