A-Level Fieldwork (Cluster 4)

What the syllabus expects
- Fieldwork is carried out on one of these areas: community response to climate change, a needs analysis of elderly residents in an urban neighbourhood, or fluvial flood risk and the strategies to reduce it
Scope: Done with teacher guidance, individually or in small groups - Crafting geographical questions or hypotheses that sit at a suitable scale, can be researched or measured, and are clearly defined
- Building a plan that sets out the primary and secondary data required to test the question or hypothesis
- Choosing suitable methods for determining sample size, selecting the sample and collecting the data
- Ensuring the data collected is accurate and reliable
- Handling research ethics and the constraints imposed by available resources, and minimising the risks of doing fieldwork
- Gathering primary data with appropriate methods and secondary data, including material from geospatial technologies
- Organising and displaying data using suitable methods
Scope: See permitted maps, graphs, photographs and other representations in the syllabus data notes - Analysing the data with appropriate qualitative and quantitative methods and drawing conclusions that answer the question or hypothesis
- Judging how valid the fieldwork is, weighing both the data gathered and the methods chosen to collect and present it
