Worked examples

Example 1 (6 marks)

Using a diagram together with supply-and-demand analysis, explain how the COVID-19 pandemic brought about the observed shifts in the market for bicycles in nations such as the USA.

Show the worked answer

On a demand and supply diagram for bicycles, demand shifts right and supply shifts left. Demand increased because the pandemic and lockdowns pushed people away from crowded public transport toward cycling as a safe individual mode of transport, and toward outdoor exercise and recreation while other leisure options were closed; cycling was also seen as a healthy, socially distanced activity. This raised demand at every price, shifting D right. Supply fell/was constrained because factory shutdowns, disrupted global supply chains and shortages of components (parts, frames) plus shipping delays reduced the quantity firms could produce and deliver, shifting S left. With demand rising and supply falling, the equilibrium price rises unambiguously. The quantity effect is ambiguous in theory, but the observed shortages and long lead times indicate demand outstripped the constrained supply, so bicycles became more expensive and hard to obtain.

Example 2 (6 marks)

Question 1: Market for Poultry (b) Drawing on Extract 1 and using a diagram, explain how growing incomes together with better poultry-farming technology are likely to influence the global poultry market in 2025. [6]

Show the worked answer

Two forces act on the global poultry market in 2025: rising incomes and better farming technology. Demand side: poultry meat is a normal good, so growing global incomes raise the ability and willingness to buy it, increasing demand and shifting the demand curve rightward (D1 to D2). Supply side: better poultry-farming technology raises productivity and lowers unit costs of production, increasing supply and shifting the supply curve rightward (S1 to S2). Diagram (describe): price on the y-axis, quantity on the x-axis. Show D1 shifting right to D2 and S1 shifting right to S2. The new equilibrium is at a higher quantity Q2 > Q1. Outcome: equilibrium quantity traded unambiguously rises, since both a rightward demand shift and a rightward supply shift increase quantity. The effect on equilibrium price is indeterminate: the demand increase pushes price up while the supply increase pushes price down. The net change depends on the relative magnitudes of the two shifts. If the supply increase dominates, price falls; if the demand increase dominates, price rises; if they are similar, price is broadly unchanged.
