Question
Using a clearly labelled diagram, explain the structure of iron and the bonding within it.
Worked answer
Iron is a metal with a giant metallic lattice. A labelled diagram shows a regular, close-packed array of positive iron ions (Fe cations) with a 'sea' of delocalised outer-shell electrons free to move between them. The bonding (metallic bonding) is the strong electrostatic attraction between these positive metal ions and the delocalised electrons, which holds the lattice together.
