Question

Work out the hybridisation adopted by the nitrogen atom(s) in each of the following species: NF4+: N2H2:

Worked answer

NF4+: the N forms 4 sigma bonds to F and has no lone pair (isoelectronic with NH4+), so 4 electron domains -> sp3. N2H2 (HN=NH): each N has a double bond to the other N, one single bond to H and one lone pair, giving 3 electron domains -> sp2.
