What the syllabus expects
- the fundamentals of collecting data, classifying it, and setting it out in tables
- reading and drawing meaning from these statistical displays: pie charts and pictograms; ordinary tables; bar graphs; line graphs; dot diagrams; stem-and-leaf plots; histograms whose class widths are equal; curves showing cumulative frequency; and box-and-whisker plots
- the purpose, applications, advantages and drawbacks belonging to each kind of statistical display
- reaching simple conclusions on the basis of statistical diagrams
- spelling out the way a given statistical diagram may distort how data is read
- the mean, the median and the mode, serving as a data set's measures of central tendency
- why the mean, median and mode are used and what each is for
- working out the mean when the data is grouped
- percentiles together with quartiles
- a data set's measures of spread, namely the range, the interquartile range and the standard deviation
- calculating the standard deviation for data that is either grouped or ungrouped
- setting two data sets side by side using their means and their standard deviations
