• The conditions behind the rise of an authoritarian regime in Japan
  Scope: Weaknesses of Japan's democratic government; economic difficulties (inflation, unemployment, landlord-tenant disputes, Great Depression); and the appeal of the ultranationalist faction through military successes and political assassinations
• The militarists' growing influence in Japan from the 1930s
  Scope: Militarists consolidating power within government; economic policy of greater state control over industry and the Campaign for Economic Revitalisation; and social policy of militarised education and control of labour unions
