What the syllabus expects

• Overview of the efforts to build workable political systems after the First World War
• The conditions that enabled authoritarian rule to rise and take hold in Germany
  Scope: Flaws of the Weimar government (problems with its constitution and its unpopularity); the pull of Hitler and the Nazi Party, including Hitler's own role and Nazi methods such as propaganda, force and contesting elections; and economic troubles including inflation, unemployment and the Great Depression
• How the Nazis consolidated their rule in Germany
  Scope: Establishing Hitler's dictatorship and one-party state; economic measures such as restoring employment, improving working conditions and moving toward a war economy; and social measures including German nationalism, persecution of ethnic and minority groups, and control over and reactions from German society
• Show awareness of political developments after the First World War
• Examine the emergence of authoritarian regimes and assess their impact on countries' political, social and economic conditions
• Evaluate the roles of key players in setting up authoritarian rule
