• Key developments in North and South Vietnam during the 1950s
  Scope: The 1954 partition, communist consolidation in the North and instability in the South - discontent over the Geneva Accords, the failure to hold national elections in 1956, and the unpopularity of Ngo Dinh Diem's actions alongside Northern support for the Southern insurgency
• Escalating tensions between North and South Vietnam from 1954
  Scope: The roles of the key parties: North Vietnam, South Vietnam, USA, USSR and China
• The end of the Vietnam War and its immediate aftermath
  Scope: The reunification of Vietnam and the beginning of détente. Students need the major turning points rather than detailed campaign study
