How the exam is structured
Paper 1
- Paper 1 (whole paper) (90 marks): Between 12 and 14 questions that differ in length and mark value, none worth more than 10 marks.
Paper 2
- Paper 2 (whole paper) (90 marks): Between 9 and 11 questions of mixed length and mark value, none worth more than 12 marks.
What the exam rewards
- AO1 Applying standard techniques: recalling facts, terminology and notation, lifting data straight from tables, graphs, diagrams and text, and carrying out routine procedures. (35% of the marks)
- AO2 Solving problems across varied contexts: choosing the right concept or formula, converting information between forms, linking topics, framing a situation mathematically, and reading results back against the problem. (50% of the marks)
- AO3 Reasoning and communicating: justifying statements, explaining within a problem's context, and setting out arguments and proofs. (15% of the marks)
